G’day Brutus readers! How are ya? In Australia, I used to drink a lot of “Flat White” coffee - a style of coffee that has recently become popular around the world but used to only be good in Melbourne (I’m joking, but it’s kind of true!). This all changed however, when I moved to Japan.

When I moved to Japan I was surprised by how many people drink straight black coffee here. I quickly got used to it though, in fact, one of my favourite small pleasures is to pour in the satchels of oily condensed milk to my coffee and watch it rise to the surface.
日本に来たときに、いかに多くの人がブラックコーヒーを飲んでいるかってことに驚きました。でも、すぐに慣れました。実際、ブラックに“コーヒーフレッシュ”を入れて、それが表面まで立ち上ってくるのを見るのが、僕のささやかな楽しみのひとつ。
Recently I visited 3 of my favourite coffee shops in Asakusa and made the following notes. My favourite places to drink coffee are at the old Japanese style coffee shops called “kissaten.”
