Yoshikawa (Hatagaya) - Sake, snacks and soba noodles
A lively soba bar run by a husband and wife team where snacks are the main attraction
Located in a side alley of Nishihara Shopping Street, the vividness of the indigo noren (shop curtains) catches the eye. This is a soba bar run by husband and wife Yoshikawa Ryota and Mari. During the vibrant nightlife of Mishuku, Ryota saw the hustle and bustle of a thriving soba restaurant that was busy until late at night and decided, "This is it," so he spent around 10 years honing his skills before going independent. He trained at restaurants such as Kaminari-an in Shibuya and Soba-mae Yamato in Roppongi, both of which are renowned for their snacks and selection of sake.
"Tempura Sare"
The soba noodles are made by a noodle manufacturer that specializes in wholesale. After repeated trial and error, they have created soba noodles that are rich in aroma and easy to swallow. They are perfectly balanced with the rich and thick soup. The tempura is an assortment of three kinds of vegetables and two kinds of seafood, which changes with the seasons. You may have intended it as a finishing touch, but you'll find yourself wanting another bowl. The photo shows an example, with eggplant, lotus root, shishito pepper, golden threadfin tuna, and shrimp. 1,600 yen.
"Wakayama Prefecture Nanban-yaki Itawasa"
Nanbayaki is a grilled kamaboko (fish cake) that is a specialty of Tanabe City in the central and southern part of Wakayama Prefecture. It has a unique elasticity and texture, and a rich fish flavor. In keeping with the Yoshikawa spirit of "a twist on the classics," we introduce this exquisite dish that the couple has searched for. 580 yen.
"Ajitama Potato Salad"
Bacon cooked just short of charcoal burner and a beautifully soft-boiled seasoned egg add a double layer of delicious flavor. This dish pays homage to the beloved specialty of Shibuya's Takataro. Its flavor makes it perfect for drinking, and pairs well with any type of alcohol. 450 yen.
There are about 30 kinds of appetizers, from rolled omelet and sashimi to seasonal dishes! The dishes incorporate local specialties and classic dishes with sauces, all of which are sure to please any drinker. The sake lineup is unique, with a focus on Tokyo breweries as well as products from Saitama and Hokkaido, the hometowns of the two chefs. There is also a comprehensive selection of craft spirits.
Mari's cheerful and courteous service, suggesting drinks, contributes to the cheerful atmosphere throughout the bar. Drink and snack to your heart's content, then finish off with some easy-to-eat thinly sliced soba noodles. The number of options for a night out in Sakaba Town has increased, which is both exciting and overwhelming.
"I want to convey the joy of drinking at a soba restaurant," says Ryota.
