Everyday tools that become one with the landscape
Aya Eto runs the gallery Natsubaki in an old house in Kamakura overlooking a beautiful, lush garden. She originally worked at an interior design shop in Omotesando, then worked at a pottery shop in Futakotamagawa before opening her own gallery in 2009.
"I wanted to propose how a house, nature, and everyday tools could come together to create a beautiful everyday landscape..." With this in mind, they chose an old house with a garden in Kamimachi, Setagaya. After nine years, in 2018, the building was demolished and they moved to their current location. Wanting to preserve the familiar scenery and atmosphere, they relocated the fixtures and gates from their previous home to Kamakura.
While the selection of works by Japanese artists that have a good texture and are easy to use is the basis, in recent years the brand has also turned its attention to colorful and unique works, as combining vivid colors and distinctive textures with standard items can create a change in the scenery.
She particularly likes the colorful tableware of Mariko Mukai, who was born in 1990 and works in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. "Her soup bowls and curry plates have a slightly rough texture and are dotted with vibrant colors. Her ideas are free-spirited, and just looking at them makes me feel lighter."
