Peeking into the surface of the water and into the heart
BRUTUS has released its first fishing feature in 17 years. It's 70 pages, all about fishing.
The theme is "The Entry Point to Fishing." The book was completed with the guidance of photographer Taro Hirano and non-fiction writer Toshiya Muraoka, two veterans of both life and fishing. While the two are usually passionate about crucian carp fishing, they are surrounded by many people who enjoy fishing in their own way, whether it be in the ocean, rivers, ponds, or lakes, and who make a living from fishing.
Searching for fish locations, observing and drawing the fish you catch, cooking and tasting them yourself - fishing isn't just about catching fish, the time you spend casting your line, the time you spend going to the water's edge and coming back, even the moment you absentmindedly think "when will I go next" are all "fishing", and where and how you enjoy it is ultimately up to you. I realized that just as there are many different styles of fishing, there are also individual personalities and stories to each person's relationship with fishing.
And what do people see, think, and what moves them when they are fishing? Being able to peek into that felt like the biggest opening for me as a fishing novice.
Surrounded by lush greenery, searching for the shadows of fish on the crystal clear water. Photographs that will make you exclaim, "That looks so fun!" and a story about one man's life and fishing. Whether you're looking to try new fishing or just starting out, we hope you'll enjoy the feeling of a never-ending summer vacation as you turn the pages, even in the lingering heat of summer.
From the special feature "Fishing with...①," Jerry Ukai and Takashi Nagazumi of Hanaregumi. Jerry, a senior angler, went minnow fishing with his old friend Nagazumi. They were a wonderful buddy, with brilliant rod handling. 
Jerry also had this book with him. He said it was a classic that made him want to get together with River.
