Eifukucho, written as "Eternally Happy Town," is located in Suginami Ward. Located just 10 minutes from Shibuya Station on the Keio Inokashira Line express train, it offers excellent access to the city center, yet is a quiet residential area surrounded by greenery, including Omiya Hachimangu Shrine, also known as the "navel of Tokyo," and Wadabori Park.
This town is often thought of as a "town for the residents," but in recent years, the number of small, independent shops has increased, and it is gradually becoming more lively. This time, we will introduce five unique spots in Eifukucho that are worth visiting.
Musashinoen
An oasis in Suginami that has existed for over 70 years
Musashinoen, located in Wadabori Park near Omiya Hachiman Shrine, is a fishing pond that has been in operation since 1951. On weekends, the pond is bustling with people strolling through the park and families. This retro and charming fishing pond is the perfect place to forget about the daily grind and refresh yourself.
And don't underestimate the restaurant attached to the premises. "We kept responding to customer requests, and before we knew it, the number of items on the menu had grown," says owner Daisuke Aoki, who boasts a whopping 100 items. From hearty dishes like katsudon (pork cutlet bowls), mapo noodles, chicken liver stew, and okra with sesame dressing, they have everything from snacks to light meals. You can satisfy your hunger between fishing trips, or just use the restaurant.
KONKO
Stylish everyday items and thoughtful gifts
Nozomi Yano, who worked as a graphic designer in Kochi Prefecture, opened this general goods store in 2023. The store is packed with items that Yano encountered on his travels and on social media, as well as items that he has loved since his 20s.
"Even though we have cute items, we try to choose things that aren't too fancy," she says, and as such, the store has a pop atmosphere with many colorful products, but it also has a selection of highly designed everyday items such as an oil dispenser from a Portuguese stainless steel manufacturer, as well as men's items such as backpacks from 41st Century. Her sense of balance in selecting timeless items shines through, demonstrating her sensibility as a designer.
Massimo Tavio
One of Tokyo's most popular restaurants, where the passion of Naples lives on
Massimo Tavio, a famous Neapolitan pizza restaurant, is not only popular with locals, but also with people who travel from far away to visit. It was opened by Massimo Tavio, a native of Naples, Italy, who was captivated by Japan during a trip there.
The pizzas are baked faithfully using traditional Neapolitan techniques, resulting in a fragrant outside and a chewy inside. With a lineup of around 40 types of pizza alone and over 10 types of pasta, you're sure to be satisfied no matter what you order. On a nice day, we recommend taking out some pizza and having a picnic at Wadabori Park.
Jalk Coffee
Honest and courteous. A small, famous restaurant where time flows at a leisurely pace
Yark Coffee, run by Masashi Sakai, who trained for about 20 years at Horiguchi Coffee, a pioneer in specialty coffee in Japan, is a specialty coffee shop that roasts its own beans.
The coffee is extracted using a cloth filter, with the aim of "exuding the warmth of human hands as much as possible." Over 10 varieties of carefully selected beans from around the world are on display, and strict quality control is carried out, with no beans being served more than three days after roasting.
The shop is tastefully lined with Danish pottery and vintage accessories from the 1940s and 1950s that Sakai has collected one by one over the years. It is a comfortable coffee shop with a solid knowledge of coffee and a quiet philosophy.
VERTERE Eifuku Taproom
Beer from that popular brewery on tap
This taproom was opened in 2024 by Batere, a craft beer brewery based in Okutama, Tokyo. Around 10 types of beer are always available on tap. As soon as a barrel is emptied, it is replaced with a new one, so you'll have to wait until you visit to find out which type is on tap.
It opens at 4pm on weekdays and 1pm on weekends and holidays, so many customers drop in for a drink while waiting for someone or before making plans for the evening. The store also sells canned beer in the refrigerator, so you can have fun choosing from an almost full lineup.
