My life revolves around games, videos, and cats
--I've often seen the name MELTMIRROR in the credits of popular music videos. Why did you choose this name?
Melt Mirror
I used the ID of a blog I created over 10 years ago as the name of my activity. Grammatically, "melting" is correct, but at the time I was a fan of the Japanese band MELT-BANANA, and I thought it looked like I was shouting "Melt it!"
--You've produced music videos for many artists, including Silica Gel and aespa. What made you get involved in video?
Melt Mirror
I majored in oriental painting at university. However, the speed of my thoughts and the speed of my hands gradually became out of sync, so I needed to find a new medium to match those speeds. Filmmaking just happened to suit me, so I stuck with it.
The same goes for games. I continued making videos, but the pace just didn't suit me, so I ended up making games (laughs). I continue to work while searching for the medium that best suits me at each stage.
--What percentage of your work is between games and video?
Melt Mirror
It's about half and half. However, although I directed quite a lot of music videos last year, aespa's "Whiplash" completely eliminated my desire for music videos, so I've decided not to take on any more music video work this year.
We are also working on several game projects. One of them is "dining 8," which was unveiled at the Seoul launch exhibition for Nike's new sneaker, Dn8. This is a puzzle game based thoroughly on game mechanics.
I've also just finished developing a short dialogue-based RPG that will be shown at an exhibition tied to the RIIZE album release. The game is based on POG, a game I've been working on for many years.
--Please tell us about the activities of the game development collective isvn.
Melt Mirror
At isvn, we mainly create tabletop role-playing games (TRPGs), which are games that are played through dialogue without the use of any devices.
In 2024, he presented "Ruki's Future" (Director: Kim Do-yi) at the Ilmin Museum of Art in Seoul. Ruki dies on the player's birthday. It's a heavy-hitting game in which the player, a friend of Ruki, overcomes his grief and travels into the past to give Ruki a new future.
A typical TRPG takes at least three hours to play, but since it was an art museum, we designed it to take just one hour.
--I imagine that film and game production involves extremely complex elements, including visual effects, storytelling, gameplay, strategy, and more. What is your source of inspiration, MELTMIRROR?
Melt Mirror
I believe that every moment of everyday life acts as a strong string that connects the ideas I am thinking about. I often watch my two cats playing with each other. The unpredictable movement of them is a great source of inspiration.
But at the core of my thinking is the influence of the Japanese manga I read as a student. I liked manga with non-linear stories, like those by Daijiro Morohoshi and Yoshiharu Tsuge. I'll never forget the visceral emotion I felt when I read Tsuge's "Nejishiki," which went beyond the realm of comprehension. It was then that I first realized the power of images transcends common sense and logic.
--Will game development be the main focus of your future activities?
Melt Mirror
Starting this year, I would like to steadily increase the importance of games. As for video works, I would like to complete a personal short film. I would like to create a work with an overwhelming image like "GUNDA" directed by Viktor Kossakovsky.
