A textile-specialized lab where experts gather and disseminate information
Sara Dias and Essi Grom studied textile surface design at Berlin's Weissensee School of Art, known for its curriculum based on the Bauhaus educational philosophy. Until they founded the Berlin Textile Co-op (BTC), a collaborative space centered around textiles, there were no such spaces in Berlin.
Textiles are an essential part of our lives, but in Germany in particular the industry is largely left to individual activity. This is why we felt the need for a place where enthusiasts could come together and share information, and this is where we started.
The simple definition of BTC is "an open space for textile enthusiasts." The majority of members are textile experts, and it functions as a place for prototyping.
It is possible to rent equipment and space, including 3D printers, tufting machines for rug making, braiding machines for yarn making, and wet labs for dyeing and screen printing. Workshops using these equipment will also be held.
Digital devices make more complex work possible and can be integrated with manual labor. Nowadays, it is common for everything to be produced in factories, but the two aim to "bring textiles, a global culture, back into people's daily lives and connect it to the future."
BTC is a reliable presence that, while adopting the latest technology, strives to pass on textiles, one of mankind's oldest technologies, to the next generation.
