How to enjoy linen, as told by Yasutaka Iida, owner of BRACKETS

Linen, with its appealing texture and unique feel, is a material perfect for Japan's hot and humid spring and summer. We spoke to Yasutaka Iida, owner of BRACKETS, about how to enjoy linen, which develops and gains character with each wear.

Wear it unfashionably, like work clothes

I like tough, crisp European linen, often seen in German or French military items. To me, linen clothing has a somewhat "workwear"-like image. When I go to Europe to buy goods, I see people with a classic style who combine a worn-out linen jacket with moleskin pants, and painters who paint while wearing a linen atelier coat.

I think it would be cool if we could wear linen as a tool like they do. Like American denim, linen has long been loved by Europeans as a tough material, and many old pieces still remain. I love the wrinkles and washed-out look that come with age, which are unique to vintage clothing.

I don't consciously think about it, but I feel like I'm collecting linen items every time I go shopping. Personally, I'd like to enjoy the spring weather in a casual way, like casually throwing on a linen jacket over a T-shirt.

In Japan, linen is often thought of as a material for spring and summer, but in Europe it is worn all year round, and it's great that there are many occasions when it's useful to have one. I'm looking for a linen shirt that's not too sexy and has a rustic look.
