A line I don't want to forget. Lyrics selected by Tamaki Shuhei, Akatsuka, Sato Moka, and Uki

Lyrics are the most familiar form of poetry. From popular songs to pop and hip-hop lyrics. They are enjoyed along with the melody and sound, but the words themselves also have rhythm. I would like to scrutinize just the words and savor their rich expression in detail, just like in fixed-form poetry and prose poetry.

Shuhei Tamaki

A line I don't want to forget

I had heard that you can't see the stars in the Tokyo sky, but it's not impossible to see them.

Fujifabric "Scarlet Sunset" (2005) Lyrics by Masahiko Shimura

Both "Tokyo" and "Sky" are motifs that musicians have sung time and again, but the song strips away the strong sentimentality that was originally there, leaving only the melancholy intact. There is no vulgarity in the song, as if trying to persuade or refute the listener with a new perspective or learning, and there is a strong attraction in the way it makes you think that it was that way all along. The subject is in the listener. I think that is the true power of words.

I don't want to forget my own line

Cup Noodles Once we pour hot water into our lives, we are destined to be chased by time.

From MONO NO AWARE's "Mamma Mia!"

Akatsuka

A line I don't want to forget

I want to be friends with you, so I'll set fire to the museum, the museum, the museum

P-MODEL "It's the person I met at the museum" (1979) Lyrics by Susumu Hirasawa

It's an extremely annoying line inserted into our everyday lives, where we navigate our instincts with reason. But even though I think it's inappropriate, I feel a purity that comes from an extremely animalistic, bottomless love. The lyrics, which feel like a quiet, creepy explosion of emotion that affirms that what is not beautiful is beautiful, gave me hope in a way.

I don't want to forget my own line

Because I'm an idol, because it's always been like this, I just want to cling to all of this and live

From South Penguin's "idol".

Sato Moka

A line I don't want to forget

Even now, I'm trapped in my memories, laughing and crying at the same time

DREAMS COME TRUE "Ima mo" (2004) Lyrics by Yoshida Miwa

I listened to this song over and over again when I was going through hard times and felt like my heart was about to burst. When I was a teenager, I thought it was amazing how adults had overcome sadness and made it this far, and I was worried if I could do the same, but the moment I discovered these lyrics made me realize that maybe it's okay to carry sadness in your heart forever, even if you don't overcome it.

I don't want to forget my own line

The future is so bright that you can't see tomorrow, but there's no need to worry!

From Sato Moka's "old young".

A line I don't want to forget

We don't have to become one, we've always been one since before we were born

GOFISH "We'll Always Be Together" (2023) Lyrics by Terai Shota

The first time I heard this song at a GOFISH solo concert, I heard these lyrics clearly. The lyrics encapsulate everything that one has overcome to reach kindness, and the truthful words shone into my heart like a ray of light, bringing a single tear to my eye. I will never forget the warmth of that tear, that moment. It has not been released as an audio recording, but you can watch a video of the performance on YouTube, so be sure to check it out.

I don't want to forget my own line

I want to see you, and the loneliness will take time to return to the sea

From Uki's "To the Sea".
