Revolutionizing watches with electronics

The company's official name is Casio Computer Co., Ltd. It was one of the first companies in Japan to perfect an electromagnetic calculator, and in 1957 it created the world's first small, all-electric calculator, the 14-A, which used a relay, leading the market. Calculators remain an important product for the company today.

In 1974, Casio Computer Company entered the watch market with the Casiotron, the world's first digital watch with an automatic calendar, leveraging the LSI technology it had developed for electronic computers. At the time, the company was known for its famous line, "A watch is the sum of seconds, one by one."

In 1983, Casio, which revolutionized wristwatches with electronic technology, gave birth to a revolutionary watch that would truly change the times. The first model of the G-SHOCK, the DW-5000C, remains a symbol of the company to this day. The goal was to achieve unprecedented shock resistance that would not break even if dropped from a height of 10 meters. Approximately 300 prototypes were repeatedly drop-tested from the third floor of the company building.

After much trial and error, they arrived at a combination of a shock-resistant structure that covers the entire surface with urethane and absorbs shock in four stages inside, and a hollow structure that supports the electronic module at points and suspends it in the air inside the case.

American police officers and firefighters were the first to take to the watch due to its outstanding shock resistance. In the 1994 film "Speed," the G-SHOCK worn by the police officer played by Keanu Reeves was frequently shown on screen, which instantly raised awareness of the watch.

Starting with the diver's watch "Frogman" released in 1993, the collection has expanded to include the women's "Baby-G," the full metal "MR-G," and the radio-controlled solar watch "Oceanus" with a full metal case. With each model linked to fashion and culture, "G-SHOCK" continues to be a huge hit worldwide.

This iconic Casio watch inherits the form and dial design of the original G-SHOCK. The first model, the DW-5000C, was also epoch-making in that it was one of the first to introduce the black colorway, a color now available in the lineups of many luxury watch brands, in 1983.

Although the exterior is retro-futuristic, it is packed with practical features such as the "Tough Solar" light charging system and "Multiband 6," which receives standard radio waves from six locations around the world and automatically adjusts the time.
