Magaya Bicycle Shop buys used bicycles, disassembles them, polishes all the parts, and reassembles them. The shop is filled with one-of-a-kind bicycles arranged with the owner, Mitsuaki Musha's unique style.
"First, I ask the customer to choose intuitively, then I check if the size is right and what they want to use the bike for. I only give them the bare minimum of information, and then I let them choose for themselves in the end," says Takesute. The style of this shop is to leave aside complicated knowledge such as which parts should be attached to this model year frame, and instead let customers choose the bike that Takesute puts together based on their own intuition. It's just like a second-hand clothing store.
The reason why the store has become so unique is that Takesute's main job is as a clothing designer.
"At a time when I was feeling the strain of creating things, I tried polishing a used bicycle, and it responded by shining brighter with the amount of work I put into it. I got hooked, and when I put them on display in my shop, the response was huge, and I ended up selling a total of 120 of them."
In 2017, he closed his clothing store and decided to sell only bicycles. As a result, he says he has been attracting customers who choose things based on their sensibility rather than knowledge.
"It's a strange store, you can't even place it upwind from a bicycle shop," Takesute says with a laugh.
