Carefully selected products produced within 100 miles! A general store filled with local love
The high cost of living, combined with inflation and new tariffs, is putting an ever-tighter financial strain on New Yorkers. So why not try local products instead of relying on goods shipped from the other side of the world? The Locavore Variety Store is a unique general store that caters to this need, with 90% of the products it carries being made within a 100-mile (approximately 160km) radius of New York.

And all of the products are from independent brands. Alongside everyday essentials like toothpaste and snacks, you'll find smile-inducing products like coffee mug-shaped bicycle valve caps from Queens-based Mugshot NYC and Pizza Suds, a detergent designed to remove pizza grease.
"We stick to nearby areas to support the local economy in terms of tax revenue and encourage local creators. This store is a showcase for the appeal of New York manufacturing," says owner Caroline Weaver. She also runs a directory that lists and introduces over 14,000 "stores I want to visit." She uses word of mouth and social media to source products.

The 100-mile radius spans four states, encompassing everything from the industrial districts of Brooklyn and Queens to crafts and apparel from Manhattan and the Upstate, and even factory products from New Jersey and Connecticut. Just like the city of New York itself, it brings together niche products from diverse communities.
