For those who love Kyoto sweets
A masterpiece of amber sugar with a rich citrus aroma
"Amber" by Eirakuya
Eirakuya was founded in Kawaramachi-Shijo, Kyoto in 1946. It is a shop that sells Kyoto tsukudani (foods boiled in soy sauce) and the Kyoto sweet "amakara" (sweetened sweets), and is a favorite among Kyoto residents as a gift.
While the signature product of Eirakuya's spicy food section is Ichito Kuchi Shiitake, made by carefully cooking small shiitake mushrooms grown on logs in Japan, the signature product in the sweets section is undoubtedly Amber Sugar.
One of their signature items is the "Amber Yuzu." In keeping with the store's philosophy of not relying on preservatives or other additives, the ingredients are simply yuzu, sugar, agar, and starch syrup. The main ingredient, yuzu, is from Kitou Yuzu in Tokushima Prefecture, known for its high quality. The yuzu peel is thinly sliced and cooked, then lined up one by one, and agar is poured over it, allowing it to dry over time. The finished amber sugar has a subtle sheen to the yuzu's yellow, like a crescent moon, and is incredibly elegant and beautiful.
The surface has a delicate, crunchy texture like thin ice, and the clear amber melts away smoothly, filling your mouth with the refined aroma of yuzu...!
Another seasonal item is the "Shizuku" series. This adorable shape is also a popular item, and it began in 2012 with the creation of "Setoka no Shizuku." The president of Eirakuya was impressed by the deliciousness of "Setoka" that he received as a gift, which led to the development of this product. The fresh flesh of Setoka is enclosed in a charming teardrop-shaped amber. When you bite into it, the rich sweetness of the flesh and the aroma of the peel burst forth. "Setoka no Shizuku" is sold from spring to early summer (late February to late May), and from June to late August it becomes the refreshingly sour "Lemon no Shizuku."
The tightly tied Mizuhiki cord packaging is also elegant, making it a perfect souvenir that anyone can carry with confidence.
