Bangkok's cutting-edge bookstores are interesting. Introducing two stores that also offer self-publishing services.

Just like in Japan, the number of independent bookstores is increasing in Thailand. Even in the current digitalization trend, the sensitivity and passion of magazine and book lovers, both creators and readers, is actually increasing. Among them, we visited a bookstore directly managed by an emerging publisher that publishes many popular books, which is scheduled to open in 2025, and a zine shop run by a design studio. Why did they decide to open a brick-and-mortar bookstore now? Hearing their thoughts is sure to deepen your interest in Thai publications. Overcome the language barrier and visit a bookstore.

SpacebarZine Store

Wimonporn Wisit and Wisart Wisit, founders of the graphic design studio Spacebar Design Studio and creators of self-published books and zines, opened a brick-and-mortar store in 2025. They stock over 300 zines and art books from around the world.

There is also a wide selection of goods with pop designs, such as stickers using Thai characters. "We also support people who want to make zines, and we want this to be a hub. Things that are cute and fun to look at should be easy for foreigners to pick up," says Wimonporn.

Salmon is a Thai cultural publishing company whose main readership ranges from students to people in their 30s. They publish many books that are easy for the younger generation to relate to, such as lifestyle, self-improvement, and travelogues.

"Salmon are born in rivers, go out to sea, and have the spirit to return to the river again, and they're delicious no matter how you cook them, so we chose them as the company name (laughs)," says editor-in-chief Patikarn Pakgai.

"While many people read online articles and e-books, there are also a certain number of people who prefer paper publications," said the company, which opened a directly managed store on the first floor of its headquarters building in April 2025. The store also carries books by Japanese authors, such as the Thai version of Yoshimoto Banana's novels. "We've been particular about the binding and have been conscious of making books that use lots of photographs and illustrations. Next, we'd like to create a space where people can casually pick up our books and talk about them."
