A few questions I really want to ask the editors-in-chief of literary magazines Gunzo, Shincho, Bungakukai, and Bungei

The editors-in-chief of Bungei, Gunzo, Bungakukai, and Shincho co-edited this edition of Bungei Brutus. What do they usually think about, and how do they create literary magazines? We took this rare opportunity to ask them about all the things we were curious about in a questionnaire format.

This article is currently available as a special feature from BRUTUS "Bungei Brutus 2025 Summer" (on sale August 1, 2025). For more details, click here.

Q1. What was the work that made you fall in love with literature?

Literature (Sakagami)

Kanai Mieko's "Indian Autumn."

Group of Figures (Toi)

Kenzaburo Oe "Personal Experience."

Literary world (Asai)

Taeko Kono "The Bizarre Tale of Miira-gathering."

Shincho (Sugiyama)

I picked up Ko Machida "Kussun Daikoku" by chance when I was in junior high school, and was shocked by how free and wonderful the Japanese language is.

Q2. What is the most important thing when editing a literary magazine?

Literature (Sakagami)

Willpower, physical strength, and luck.

Group of Figures (Toi)

I treasure novels and let them be surrounded by writings and words from various genres.

Literary world (Asai)

How to incorporate the "now." Because it's a delayed medium.

Shincho (Sugiyama)

Whether it's the development of the story or argument, or the expression of details, I'm careful to avoid clichés.

Q3. What is the recommended way to read literary magazines?

Literature (Sakagami)

Skim through, pick up bits, and do things on impulse.

Group of Figures (Toi)

First, look at the table of contents, like looking at a map of a theme park. Get a feel for the overall atmosphere, and if there's anything that catches your eye, go there.

Literary world (Asai)

For now, I'd like you to take your time to look at the cover and table of contents.

Shincho (Sugiyama)

Why not start by reading a short manuscript, such as an essay, and try to imagine the writer's expression?

Q4. What do you think is interesting about literature?

Literature (Sakagami)

Encounter with humans.

Group of Figures (Toi)

Things like correct answers, goals, and results don't fit.

Literary world (Asai)

A place where you can only write and read by yourself.

Shincho (Sugiyama)

Through reading, you can discover a new side of yourself.
