This summer, go on your own adventure
For this special feature, we interviewed people who are engaged in "adventurous activities" in various fields around the globe, including land, sea, and air. "I want to ask you about these things, so I'd like to create a book tentatively titled 'Adventurers'." The interviews began with an explanation of the project, and although the expressions and nuances varied, the first thing most people said was something like this: "Actually, I don't think of myself as an adventurer."
I was frightened that the project would fail, but he continued, "But people around me often call me an adventurer, so I don't mind being described that way." And so the book was completed, with the title "Adventurers" still intact.
However, even if it looks clearly adventurous from the outside, the people themselves don't see it as such. This difference in perception is very thought-provoking. When you think about it, there wasn't a single person who was thinking, "Okay! Let's take a risk, let's go on an adventure!" Some people are heading for places where no one has ever been before, some are looking for a life before civilization was as advanced as it is today, and some want to experience the limits of their own physical strength and skills. Each of them desires "the unknown in their own way," and continues to take on challenges driven by their curiosity.
It seems that "curiosity for the unknown" may be a key word that unlocks the secrets of adventure. In today's world, where all kinds of information can be accessed digitally, there are many barriers to experiencing things for yourself. It takes time and money, it seems tiring and stressful... and you can watch it online. But without putting the brakes on, adventurers give in to their curiosity and head out into the unknown - all of the people we interviewed were full of life.
This issue begins with their adventure stories, and includes books and videos on the theme of adventure. We hope to have packed it with content that will get you excited and inspire you to go on an adventure of your own. While being mindful of the risks, why not step firmly on the accelerator of your curiosity for the unknown and seek out "your own adventure" this summer?
