The real "somek" is all about the bubbles!

Somek is a cocktail made by mixing soju (distilled spirits) with beer. This drinking style, which is said to have become popular in the 2000s, is an essential part of Korean drinking culture. While you can often see flashy videos of the performances on social media, we asked Deep Mind, a band that has performed at the Brutus Jazz Festival, to tell us how it's done locally.

"First, choose the right drink. If you want a mild flavor, the long-established CASS and Chamisul are the best. The key is to create bubbles when mixing. This will release the carbonation and make the drink smoother." The rest is down to practice. I recommend you try it at a Pocha (Izakaya).

Three tips on how to make "somek".

1. First of all, the selection of beer and soju is key.

2. The ratio of soju to beer should be 1:2.

3. Now, just hit the spoon hard to create a foam!
