Ask three people who love reading glasses: How to enjoy them

"Reading glasses are a fashionable item," says one person. On the other hand, others say, "They make me look old, and it's a shame." Considering the fact that about half of Japanese people are nearsighted, isn't it a good idea to occasionally think about reading glasses? People who have never worn glasses before may find a new individuality in them, and there is also the option of getting progressive glasses. We asked three regular users about their reading glasses preferences.

It has become an indispensable fashion essential.

Yoshihiro Nakane (Director of Noah Japan)

"These are my second pair of Ayame reading glasses, and I really like them," says Nakane Yoshihiro, whose favorite pair is a pair of gold frames that complement his trademark blonde hair perfectly.

"Reading glasses may have a slightly negative impression, but I use them in a positive way, like adding another piece of wearable accessory," he says, and combined with the Montbell glasses cord, they have become a key point in his styling.

"I usually hang it down, but it's dangerous on crowded trains, so I usually put it on my head (laughs)."

We want everyone to enjoy their own unique piece as part of their fashion sense.

Tetsuya Okada (CEO of Globe Specs)

"I've always been nearsighted, so I use bifocal lenses," says Tetsuya Okada, president of Globe Specs, a global eyewear retailer.

"Whether it's varifocals or reading glasses, the thing you have to be most careful about is losing them (laughs). To prevent that, I use a silver glasses holder," says Okada, holding a glasses holder from the American brand LA LOOP on his chest. In fact, the brand named it "THE OKADA" after learning that Okada was a regular user.

"There are many different types of reading glasses. It's a good idea to try them out in the store and choose the one that suits you best."

His favorite is the Scye SPECS model, made from tortoiseshell to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Globe Specs, priced at 446,050 yen.

Reading glasses are a new staple that I absolutely need right now.

Ken Kagami (contemporary artist)

"I started using reading glasses around 2019. I bought them out of necessity because it was getting harder to see on my smartphone and draw," says Kagami Ken, showing us his four favorite pairs. As the prescription of his first pair gradually changed, he bought more, and in the end he uses two types: +1.0 and +1.5.

Kagami loves to use four colorful pens that she bought from IZIPIZI, a general store, and Amazon. IZIPIZI is a brand that was founded in Paris in 2010 and offers a wide variety of designs.

"I just keep a pair for my studio and one for home so I don't lose them. Actually, my eyesight is still good, so I only use reading glasses for everyday life and work," says Kagami, wearing his glasses. His choice of colors that are not basic, such as pink and marble, is very much like him.

"I don't know if it's a fashionable item or not, but now it's become my new staple item and I can't let it go."
