His determination to continue challenging himself even at an advanced age is inspiring

Tom Cruise is already 62 years old. It's no surprise these days that older people take on new challenges. However, their actions and challenges often convey a sense of determination and weight. How to live the second half of life is also an important issue for us modern people.

"Straight Story"

A reckless journey that only comes with age

When 73-year-old Alvin learns that his brother, with whom he has had a falling out, has collapsed, he decides to go and visit him on his lawnmower. Along the way, Alvin meets many different people. When a young man asks him, "What's the best thing about getting older?" his answer is striking: "I no longer worry about the little things." Perhaps this is why he was able to embark on such a reckless journey.

"Edie, 83, Climbing a Mountain for the First Time"

It's not too late, I'm here now

"It's never too late." Edie, an 83-year-old woman who has dedicated her life to caring for her husband, is encouraged by these words when she orders an extra serving at her favorite fish and chips shop to fulfill her long-held dream of climbing a mountain in Scotland. In the mountains, Edie places her hand on Aoba's. The wrinkles on her hand are deeper and more numerous than the veins of a leaf, but the eyes that gaze upon it sparkle like a young girl's.

Columbus: The Eternal Sea

An unprecedented road movie starring a 99-year-old director and his wife

This is an adventure drama about a historian and his wife who are trying to prove the theory that Columbus was Portuguese. Director Oliveira was 99 years old at the time of production. What's more, the director himself plays the lead role, and his real-life wife (a commoner) plays the heroine, making this a more challenging film than any other. Oliveira's voice, forgetting his role and spontaneously praising his wife after she finishes a long, unfamiliar line, is particularly heartwarming.

A touching story of a child at the mercy of the adult world

Along with the elderly, there is another group of people who I find myself worrying about: children. Children have to toughen up in the face of the relentless adult world, and often lack the means and strength to resist.

“Kuling Street Juvenile Murder Case”

Boys struggling in a chaotic era

The story is set in Taipei in the early 1960s. Children of the so-called "waishengren" (mainlanders), who came from mainland China in the late 1940s in search of stability, sense the anxiety of the adults and begin to gang up. While adults fight over politics and power, these boys resort to violence. At the mercy of this environment, Xiao Si loses sight of his own identity and causes a terrible incident.

"Defenseless City"

The cruelty of war leaves indelible scars on the boys' memories

In Italy at the end of World War II, many children participated in the resistance movement against Nazi Germany. However, their resistance was futile, and the members were arrested and executed one by one. The expressions on the boys' faces as they watched this brutal scene through a wire fence are unforgettable. War not only robs them of their childhood, but also leaves them with scars that will never fade.

Radio Flyer

I want to send my little brother in a wagon flying to a happier world.

Mike is heartbroken to learn that his younger brother, Bobby, is being abused by their stepfather, their mother's new husband. However, Bobby keeps quiet about his brother, saying, "I don't want to worry Mom." One day, the abuse finally gets out of hand, and the two of them come up with a plan. They load Bobby into a small wagon they've modified to look like an airship and send him flying to a faraway, happy place where his stepfather is no longer around. "The truth is in the story," says Mike as an adult.

Short Term 12

Expressing the feelings he's always suppressing through rap

Short Term 12 is a short-term shelter for traumatized teenagers. Marcus has to leave the shelter when he turns 18, and he's worried about having to go back to living with his abusive mother. There's a great scene in which the traumatized Marcus raps about his hatred for his mother. Rapping is the only way he can express the truth he normally keeps to himself.
