There's more to enjoy than just "looking at fish"! Two urban aquariums of the future

There's more to enjoy than just "looking at fish." In recent years, urban aquariums like this have been on the rise. Based on the concept, they put a lot of thought into the space and exhibit methods. Since they're located in the city, you can just drop in whenever you like and take your time to look at the aquarium tanks.

The future of urban aquariums

AOAO SAPPORO

An aquarium that blends into everyday life, with a bar and workspace

It will open in July 2023 in the center of Sapporo, inside moyuk SAPPORO, a new landmark in Tanukikoji Shopping Street. On weekdays, it is an oasis for adults to relax and connect with nature in the city.

The zoo is home to 4,000 aquatic creatures of 250 species, including the world's smallest penguin, the Fairy Penguin (Little Penguin). The exhibits are designed with ingenuity, including opening up the backyard and using digital art. The zoo also features background music created based on sound communication, which uses sound as a starting point to design behavior, and natural aromas that fill the air throughout the zoo, creating a soothing atmosphere that allows visitors to immerse themselves in each unique world.

We raise fairy penguins (left) and northern rockhopper penguins (right). Wing bands are used to identify each individual. Which one is your favorite?

You are free to bring food and drinks anywhere in the aquarium. After work, stop by the bar and ask yourself, "Would I like some jellyfish or penguins as a snack?" It's a special time to relax and gaze at your favorite aquarium with a beer in hand. There is also a co-working space with Wi-Fi and power outlets. This is truly an aquarium you'll want to visit again and again.

AQUARIUM×ART átoa

A world of stories told through aquariums and art

The planet-like spherical aquarium, AQUA TERRA, is one of the largest in the world! As you gaze upon the leisurely swimming fish, a laser and mist show begins, enveloping visitors in a veil of light.

The theme of átoa in the Kobe Shinko area is "the fusion of aquarium and art." The eight zones within the aquarium are not divided by fish habitat. Instead, you'll find otherworldly realms such as "Cave," "Forest of Spirits," and "Space." For example, the story on the floor of MIYABI, "Wa to Hikari no Ma," tells the story of Japan's four seasons as foreigners imagine them. An installation combining delicate paper cutting and a variety of lights highlights native Japanese creatures, such as the koi carp swimming gracefully at your feet.

Zookeepers curate creatures that fit the worldview of each zone. In the mysterious forest, ELEMENTS Forest of Spirits, giant tortoises roam beside an aqua terrarium filled with tropical freshwater fish. Everyone will be captivated by the originality of this fantastical mix of water, creatures, and art.
