A playful and skillful expression of emotion

I've loved Chaplin's silent films since I was a child. As I delved deeper into the ragtime music used in them, I also started listening to jazz. Personally, I'm drawn to playful, accessible performances rather than technically sophisticated pieces.

I'm really moved by the moments when subtle emotional nuances are expressed in a casual way. I sometimes find myself pondering the meaning of making music. But jazz players don't seem to think too hard about it, and just seem to focus on expressing their own style. I listen to jazz and hope to incorporate that atmosphere into my own music.

Mei Ehara's top 3 picks

Q1: What is your all-time favorite?

『Solo Monk』Thelonious Monk

This is an unaccompanied piano solo work by Thelonious Monk. I like the fact that Monk's piano has a rough feel and a touch of missteps, and isn't too rigid. Because this album is solo, his individuality stands out even more. I also like the simplicity that doesn't get in the way of desk work.

Q2: What did you listen to the most last year?

『Another Time』Meredith D'Ambrosio

This piano and vocal album by Boston-born jazz singer Meredith D'Ambrossio is primarily comprised of standard covers. While her singing is certainly impressive, her vocals are captivatingly simple and unconventional, in a good way. Her songs have a familiarity reminiscent of folk music, making this an album you'll want to listen to again and again.

Q3: What would you recommend to people who are just starting to listen to jazz?

『Blossom Dearie Sings』Blossom Dearie

Blossom Dearie's charming, unique whispery voice is a hallmark of her music. While neither her piano nor her vocals seem particularly difficult, upon closer listening, her music is filled with a unique dynamic and charm that only she can pull off. While the songs she sings are jazz, there are also pop elements, making this a piece that will leave a lasting impression on many.
