Freelance PR Hiroko Eda's favorite mountain gear, including secondhand Patagonia fleece.

Just as people enjoy hiking in different ways, so too do their gear choices. Many gear enthusiasts say that choosing the right gear is part of the fun of hiking. The gear a person chooses reveals how they approach the mountains.

Using natural materials, using second-hand clothes, and even renting. Choosing tools that are "recyclable" and reduce environmental impact.

I want to preserve the nature I love for future generations. When I go mountain climbing, I naturally start thinking about the environment. However, it's also true that much outdoor wear is made from synthetic fibers, which puts a heavy burden on the environment. That's why I love icebreaker, a New Zealand brand that makes clothing using merino wool.

Among them, the Nature Dye T-shirts are a series dyed with natural materials such as vegetables and plants. Because both the materials and dyes are natural, they are biodegradable and return to the soil after disposal.

On the other hand, winter clothing that requires high thermal insulation inevitably requires the power of synthetic fibers, but for these I choose second-hand clothing. The Patagonia fleece is a USA model from the 1980s, and its color and silhouette are beautiful and not found in current products. It is well-made to begin with, so there is no problem with heat retention. For gear that I only use a few times a year, such as sleeping bags, I rent them.

The orange T-shirt is dyed with onion skin, and the purple with a plant called logwood. I also love the silhouette of this secondhand fleece.
